A Major Policy Change for Immigration Applicants
Great news for those going through the U.S. immigration process! The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has officially removed the COVID-19 vaccination requirement for green card applicants and other immigration-related medical examinations. This change simplifies the process for many individuals seeking permanent residency or other immigration benefits in the United States.
At Abeckjerr Immigration Law, we are always monitoring immigration policies to keep our clients informed. Here’s what this policy update means for you.

What Changed?
Previously, individuals applying for permanent residency (green cards) were required to receive a full series of COVID-19 vaccinations as part of the medical examination conducted by designated civil surgeons. However, as of January 19th, 2025, the CDC has removed COVID-19 vaccination from the list of required immunizations for immigration medical exams.
Who Benefits from This Change?
This update is especially significant for:
✅ Green card applicants (both family-based and employment-based)
✅ Refugees and asylees adjusting status
✅ Certain nonimmigrant visa applicants who are required to complete a medical exam
✅ People with medical or religious concerns about the COVID-19 vaccine
With this change, applicants will no longer face delays or additional costs related to COVID-19 vaccination requirements when completing their Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record.
Do You Still Need a Medical Exam?
Yes. The immigration medical exam remains a crucial step in the green card process. While the COVID-19 vaccine is no longer required, other routine vaccinations—such as measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), polio, and hepatitis B—are still mandatory under U.S. immigration law. Applicants must still undergo a medical exam with a designated civil surgeon and comply with the remaining vaccine requirements.
What Does This Mean for Pending Applications?
If you had previously delayed your application due to the COVID-19 vaccine requirement, you can now move forward without that concern. Those with pending applications who have not yet completed their medical exams should check with their designated civil surgeon to ensure compliance with the latest requirements.
